Spiro came to Lloydminster in 1970, after some years
in Saskatoon. He was soon in the restaurant business - first
operating the restaurant at the Shell service station which was on the
site now occupied by Wendy's. Later, along with his brother's
"Bill" and "Jim", he operated the 3K Ranch House downtown.
When the Alberta economy was devastated in the early 1980's by the so-called "National Energy Program" the brothers lost their business, and even their homes.
Thanks to the help of Peter Gulak, then manager of Border Credit Union, who made a loan to Spiro on the strength of his character, not his balance sheet, Spiro was able to re-establish himself in the restaurant business. Along with his wife Tina he operated Spiro's on the Saskatchewan side of Highway 17 for 18 years.
In 2007, Spiro and Tina, now in partnership with daughter Maria and her husband Fayne, moved across Highway 17 (which in Lloydminster means from Saskatchewan to Alberta) and south to 14th Street. Their new location offers a stylish, comfortable atmosphere for their well-known great food and friendly personal service.
Spiro and family are also known for giving back to the community. For example, for many years they have hosted a complimentary thanksgiving dinner at the Anglican Church Hall where free meals are provided for any and all. It's part of Spiro's dedication to his community and depicts his philosophy of life; "to please, The One We Serve".
