Holy Trinity
Church - Golden Valley
In the year 1904, soon after my husband's death, I sold up my house in
England, and with my two sons and daughter took up three Government grants
on the above estate. We were 15 miles from the Town Church [St.
John's - Lloydminster], and Sundays with no Church and several young men,
who came to our home for company and music, after being accustomed to
regular Sunday service in England, troubled me greatly. I wrote to
the Bishop of Saskatchewan offering the use of our shack if he could send
us a minister, my sons would give the music.
The son of the Rev. B. W. Hunt of
Tunbridge-Wells had just arrived at the Bishop's house, so he sent him
straight to us, and a clever popular young man he soon became, and for
five years services were held at our home; sometimes 40 or 50 persons came
from long distances to our meetings, and all seemed so grateful. Mr.
Hunt sought the aid of his father, when one of the congregation of Holy
Trinity Church - Tunbridge-Wells present us with £50 towards our building
a Church, shack and stablings. My son gave an acre of land for it.
The Ecclesiastical Fund gave £250 towards it, and we, with the
congregation, raised the rest. A Toronto firm gave us a carpet and
two chairs for the Communion and other furniture came with it. Our
dear
Queen Alexandra gave a nice organ and we were very proud and grateful
for it. My younger son acted as Church Warden till last September.
... the congregation, in appreciation of my son's faithful work, presented
him with a fountain pen and case of ebony brushes.
The Bishop present [me] with a beautiful Bible when the Church was
consecrated. We always looked forward to these Church services with
great happiness, and to meet friends after lonely weeks of hard work for
man and woman. I pray the Church will continue to be a comfort to
all around.
Yours
very sincerely,
