Harold HuxleyHarold Huxley was born in Wem, Shropshire, in the United Kingdom, on January 5, 1881. Harold and his brother Leonard were members of the main party of "Barr Colonists", arriving in 1903. [See Passenger List - here] Harold was very active in public life in Lloydminster's early years.
He was a founding member of the Lloydminster Exhibition Association and served as its secretary treasurer from 1907 - 1932. He was a member of the town council of Lloydminster, SK and served as its mayor from 1918 - 20, and from 1926 - 29. [There was a separate village of Lloydminster, AB at the time.] Harold won the respect and gratitude of the community for his tireless service during the great influenza epidemic of 1918-1919. He was instrumental in the amalgamation negotiations and would become the first mayor of the amalgamated municipality in 1930. [See Lloydminster Wedding] In addition; Harold Huxley was a member of the Masonic, Oddfellow and Orange fraternities; a charter member of the Elks Lodge and Rotary Club of Lloydminster. He died suddenly on September 21, 1932. In 1985, he was inducted into the Lloydminster Agricultural Hall of Fame. |
