ANDERS 0. AALBORG
Anders 0. Aalborg was born in Oxville, Alberta, August 24, 1914.
In 1939 he married Catherine May Burn of Provost, Alberta. The couple had two
children, John and Roberta. Anders attended elementary school at Oxville and high school at
Chauvin and Vermilion. In 1933 Anders graduated from Normal School in Edmonton.
Mr. Aalborg was
teacher and principal at schools in the County of Vermilion River from 1933 to
1952. From 1945 to 1949 he was member and president of the Provincial
Executive of the Alberta Teacher's Association.
Anders Aalborg was elected as a Social Credit member in 1948 to
represent to the Constituency of Alexandra (Lloydminster) in the Alberta
Legislative Assembly, and was re-elected in 1952, 1955, 1959, 1963 and 1967. He
did not run for re-election in 1971. In September 1952 Anders was appointed Minister of Education and
held that office until appointed provincial treasurer in July1964. From 1967 to
1969 he was Minister of Telephones.
Highlights from Anders' term as Minister of Education include
the development of public Junior Colleges, the Calgary University, major
expansion of Vocational and Technical training at NAIT and SAIT and development
of the Foundation Program of School Finance for Public and Separate Schools.
During his term as Treasurer he prepared Alberta's submissions to the Federal
-Provincial Tax Structure committee and acted as chairman of the Alberta
Resources
Railway Corporation, The University Survey Committee, the Public
Service Pensions Board and the Revenue and Expenditure Study Committee. From 1954 to 1971 Anders was responsible for the administration of all Liquor
Legislation, the Public Service Act and Negotiations with the Alberta Civil
Service Association.
Anders is a life member of the Alberta Trustees Association, and Honorary Life
Member of the Alberta Legislative Press Gallery and the Alberta Association of
Colleges.
Anders O. Aalborg passed away in 2000 in Surrey, British Columbia.
