Dr. Stephen C. West was born in London, Ontario, May 21, I943. He
studied at the Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate Institute, and earned his doctorate
of Veterinary Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College.
Dr. West's career experience includes owning and operating the West
Veterinary
Clinic in Vermilion for fifteen years, and operating his own farming
operation near Vermilion. He founded and was President of the Board of Directors
for a veterinary and distribution centre. He also taught Animal Science
Technology at Lakeland College.
Dr. West was first elected to the Alberta Legislature in March, 1989.
He was Minister of Recreation and Parks from April, 1989 to February, 1992;
Solicitor General from February, 1992 to December, 1992; and Minister of
Municipal Affairs from December, 1992 to June, 1993.
Dr. West was re-elected MLA for the new constituency of Vermilion - Lloydminster
on June15, 1993 and re-appointed Minister of Municipal Affairs. He was
Minister of Transportation and Utilities from December, 1994 until May, 1996,
when he was appointed Minister bf Economics Development and Tourism. Dr.
West was reelected as MLA for Vermilion - Lloydminster on March 11, 1997 and
appointed Minister of Energy on March 26, 1997.
During Dr. West's past ministerial appointments his responsibilities have
included the Alberta Sports Council, Alberta Recreation (Parks and Wildlife),
the Alberta Liquor Control Board, Professions and Occupations, Housing and Consumer
Affairs, Alberta Registries, Access Corporation, Alberta Lotteries, Alberta
Gaming Commission, Alberta Racing Commission,
Disaster Services and the Alberta Opportunity Company. Dr.
West served as Minister of Energy with responsibility for Alberta Energy and
Utilities Board, the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission, the Treasury Board
and the Standing Policy Committees on Financial Planning and Human Resources,
and Jobs and the Economy.
Dr. West's last cabinet position was Minister of Finance. He retired from politics in 2001.
Currently he serves as Vice-President, Corlac Inc.
Steve and his wife Marie (Young), formerly of Lloydminster, have four
children.
