DEBRA KUZYK
Debra
Kuzyk was born in Cutknife, Saskatchewan in 1958 and later moved to
Lloydminster with her family. In
1960 she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, with honors
in a Bachelor of Education degree.
Her interest in ceramics and art design led her to travel and study in other
countries and various institutions such as Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles;
Alberta College of Art, Calgary; Banff Centre of Fine Arts, Banff; and Nova
Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax, where she received her Bachelor of
Fine Arts in Ceramics and printmaking.
Debra settled in Stephenville on the west coast of Newfoundland where in their
spacious studio she and a collaborating artist created covered jars, teapots,
casseroles, exotic planters, fountains, tableware, as welt as other types of
artistic production. The work produced is the result of years of experimentation
and personal exploration. The Newfoundland environment has strongly influenced
this distinctive pottery. This is evident in the animal, plant and fish motifs
seen son many of the pieces, as well as in the handling of color and form.
Debra's work has been featured in five solo exhibitions and numerous. group
exhibitions across Canada and internationally.
Collections that feature her pieces include the city of Calgary and Lloyd
Hall Permanent Collection, Banff Centre. Currently
Debra is an instructor at the College of the North Atlantic in Stephenville,
Newfoundland.
