Gordon joined the town of Lloydminster fire department in 1935 and three years later, in 1938, was appointed Deputy Chief.  He held that rank and served with the department until 1973 when he was appointed the Fire Department's Adminsitrator, in which position he served until his retirement in December, 1988.  In 1950 Gordon was elected to Council and served as an alderman until 1959.  He was elected Mayor in 1963 and held that position until 1968.  Following a short break he was re-elected as mayor in 1971 and 1972.  Gordon also sat on the Library Board, Jubilee Home Board, Museum Board, and Zoning Appeal Board for many years.  He served as Justice of the Peace for twenty-two years.
In 1963 the Governor of Canada Fire Services Exemplary Service medal was presented to Gordon in recognition of 20, 30, and 40 years of loyal and meritorios service to public security in our community.  In 1987, he was presented an additional bar for 50 years service. In recognition of his 54 years service with the fire department, Fire Station No.1 was renamed the E.G. Hudson fire Station No. 1. Gordon always said, “If a job is worth doing, it is worth doing right.”
