LEO CAVANAGH
Leo Cavanagh first called Lloydminster "home" in May
of 1947 when he began working with Husky on the construction of the first Husky
asphalt refinery. By mid 1954 he was named refinery manager.
His community and civic interest resulted in the capturing a seat on
Lloydminster City Council as alderman from 1963 to 1966. In 1969 he became mayor
of the City, a position he held until 1970.
Transferred to Calgary in 1977, as General Manager of Refining, Led later moved
to Manager of Heavy Oil Upgrading. In this capacity he supervised the heavy oil
upgrading process and plant location studies. In 1982 he took early retirement
and two years later, in August of 1984, the Cavanaghs resumed residence in
Lloydminster.
Leo was married to Mary Howell in 1949 and together they raised five children.
Ted returned to Lloydminster in 1975 to begin his teaching career in the
Lloydminster Public School System. At present he teaches at the E.S. Laird
Junior High School. Tom returned in 1980 to begin his medical practice at the
Lloydminster Clinic, where he currently practices. In 1978 Peggy returned to the
city to article with a local law firm and now is in general law practice in
Vermilion. Jerry, after several years teaching in Zaire, returned to Canada in
1983 and presently teaches French at College St. Jean in Edmonton. Mary Ellen
lives in Cochrane, Alberta with her husband Larry and three daughters. She still
finds time to paint, which has been her long time hobby.
The Cavanagh's continuing interest in community affairs is evident in their many
community and charitable activities. These include: Church Committees, Rotary,
Meals on Wheels, Dr.Cooke Extended Care Centre, Hospital Foundation Board,
Seniors Curling, "2003" Committee, and tutoring new Canadians in the
LEARN program.
Leo passed away suddenly in March 2003.
