WINIFRED BRYNE

Winifred Bryne (nee English) was born December 23,1901 in England. Winifred wrote her memoirs for the family in 1992. She said, "I am of advanced age. What is left of me is sort of a patchwork affair. It is necessary to wear glasses to be able to see well; to have a hearing aid in my right ear (it resembles a wad of chewing gum) to be able to hear when anyone wants to speak to me; an assortment of crockery in my mouth so my food is well chewed; a stick in my hand for balance when I walk. This they called the 'Golden Years' many decades back. Old Age is for the Birds." What a sense of humour!

The English's travelled on the S.S. Manitoba by train to Saskatoon and in early July of 1903 made their way to Bresaylor where Mr. English filed for a homestead. He was a teacher, but with more studying and exams became an Anglican minister. In 1909 they moved to Lashburn where Mr. English was Rector of the church then to Little Pine Reserve at Paynton.

Winifred married John Bryne (a teacher) in Whitehorse, Yukon in 1927. After many moves they settled in Alberta in 1985. John died in 1989. They have a family of three children, eleven grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren. Winifred travelled to Lloydminster in 1978 for the 75th birthday celebration. In 1993, Winifred again returned as one of four Barr Colonist who attended the 90th Anniversary. Her health prevented her from being with us in 2003 but we recognize Mrs. Bryne as the last living Barr Colonist.
