Jack Boyd moved to Lloydrninster around 1913 from Lashburn,
Saskatchewan, where he had operated a Harness Shop. He opened a Barber Shop and
later a Pool Room in Lloydminster and after finding employee barbers
quite transient, he took up the trade, which he practiced until retirement. Mr.
Boyd's Barber Shop was a regular meeting place for a large circle of friends. He
welcomed strangers to town and was a great booster for Lloydminster.
He met Ruby Ewens in Lashbum and after a lengthy engagement they were married in
192O. They had two children: Lorne, who upon graduation from High School joined
the RCAF and was later reported missing in action in September, 1943, and
Eileen, who graduated as an Occupational Therapist from the University of Puget
Sound in Tacoma, Washington.
He was a strong supporter and organizer of sports including football, baseball,
hockey and curling. He was a football player from 1913 until 1926, helping the
Lloydminster team win many medals and trophies of which he was very proud. He
helped the Board of Trade organize their Annual Hockey Tournaments from 1938 to
1956. Curling was another of his pleasures for many years. He was honored to be
asked to throw the first rock for the opening of the new curling rink in 1955
and "drew right to the button". He also served several terms as Public
School Board Trustee and Chairman of the Board.
Mr. Boyd was a faithful member of Grace United Church and a member of the choir
for over 36 years. He enjoyed Sunday evening informal singing groups and
encouraged new ones at church to come to his home and meet other friends.
